Words on Water
Extracts from conversations with different women from the African diaspora. The piece captures the poignancy, personal enquiry and memories of these women linked to the fluidity of identity and how we explore our experiences of being British. The work is a commentary on our need to communicate and connect as communities. It is intended to be a growing archive, capturing the experiences surrounding water and how we use this context to navigate ancestral heritage and connection to homeland. I hope that the words act as a release and provide a sense of liberation. The artwork was displayed to interact to it’s environment, moving to the wind, back and forth like the waves of the water. The timber construction is a nod back to the area’s links to the industry of timber in the area.
