Promises to the water are often made as part of rituals, ceremonies, and personal reflections. People around the world, including in Jamaican culture, make promises to the water for various reasons, such as seeking protection, guidance, or healing. These promises can be deeply personal and symbolic.
In August 2023, Chantelle invited participants to leave their own promises to the water as a form of gratitude and respect and tie them to the structure. The collective words will form a growing archive exploring the cultural significance that water has on our everyday lives.
